"I see...I hope she's not seriously ill."
"Oh, she's not, m'lord...just a mild cold is all.", she quickly reassured the Shrike and gazed up at him contently as they continued to dance.
The ball in itself was like a dream to Stelon. She had never imagined she'd find herself in such an elegant place as this, let alone in the arms of a man of Larkin's status. She was thoroughly enjoying herself and continued to smile even as Larkin turned his eyes from her to something else. She followed his gaze and tried to see what he was looking at, but she failed miserably. When he returned his gaze to her eyes, she was still smiling at him, looking back into his own eyes. It was quite obvious she loved his unusal eyes and the rest of him as well.
They continued to dance, and she tried not to let the fading of his smile bother her. Yet it did. What was wrong? Had she done something? Did he know she hadn't told him the whole truth? And then he smiled again. Just as he had been before. She relaxed again and assumed he had been thinking of the reason for the party, whatever it was. Perhaps there was something he needed to do.
"Stelon... Are you lying to me?"
She felt all of her muscles tense as she tried to think of what to say. She had lied to him. Yet she hadn't. What was the proper answer? What should she tell him? Should she tell him the whole truth? No. Definitely not. Miraye would be furious, as would Matthias. She shifted her eyes slightly and tried to remain calm as her mind raced through all of the possible answers she could give him.
